Being a one-woman shop owner in the witchcraft community is both a beautiful and challenging journey. When I started The Mystical Crow, I knew I wanted to create something unique, something that truly felt like an extension of myself. I wanted to offer witchy, vintage, and occult-inspired items that spoke to others in the same way they spoke to me. What I didn’t realize was just how much work it would take to bring that vision to life—and to keep it alive and thriving.
Running a small business, especially in such a niche market, has incredible rewards but also comes with its fair share of struggles. Here are some of the things I’ve learned about the highs and lows of being a solo shop owner in the witchcraft community:
The Joys of Building Community
One of the greatest rewards is the incredible community that has grown around The Mystical Crow. Every time I connect with a customer on Instagram or see a tag from someone using one of my products on their altar, I’m reminded why I do what I do. The love and support I’ve received have been more meaningful than words can describe. Being part of a community that appreciates handmade, intentional, witchy items makes all the late nights and hard work worth it.
The Creative Freedom of Being a Solo Business Owner
As the sole owner, I get to make all the creative decisions for my business. From designing products to curating collections and setting up my website, everything comes straight from my heart and hands. I love that The Mystical Crow is an authentic expression of my vision, with every item crafted or chosen carefully. There’s a certain magic to knowing each piece I send out holds my personal touch and intention.
The Challenges of “Doing It All”
However, being a one-woman show isn’t easy. I handle everything—creating, curating, photography, website design, social media, packaging, shipping, customer service, and more. Each package that goes out is wrapped and prepared by me, and while I’m grateful to have such a hands-on approach, it can also be overwhelming. Sometimes, I have to step back and take a break for my mental and physical health, knowing that my community will understand and be there when I return.
Competing with Large Corporations
One of the biggest struggles as a small business owner is competing with large corporations that have extensive marketing budgets and can afford to sell similar items for less. While I focus on handmade quality, it can be hard to stand out in a market where bigger brands dominate. However, I’ve found that authenticity and community make a difference. My customers are looking for something more personal, something created with care and intention. This is a constant reminder that, despite the challenges, there is room for small, independent creators in the world.
Building a Supportive Community on Instagram
Instagram has become my main connection to the witchy community and a way to reach those who share a love for the mystical, the vintage, and the handmade. It’s not just about sharing products; it’s about connecting with people who resonate with the same aesthetic, beliefs, and energy. My followers are like an extended family, and I appreciate each one of them for sticking with me, even when I need to step away to recharge. You all help me feel supported, seen, and understood, and I am endlessly grateful for that.
Thank You for Your Support
For everyone who has supported The Mystical Crow, thank you. Your kindness, encouragement, and understanding keep me going, especially when the work feels overwhelming. Knowing there are people who appreciate what I create and continue to come back means the world to me. I couldn’t do this without you, and I feel so lucky to have a community that allows me to follow my passion and turn my dreams into reality.
As I keep working to grow The Mystical Crow, I hope to bring even more unique offerings, connect with even more of you, and continue creating a space where magic, creativity, and community thrive. Thank you for being here, for every like, every message, every purchase, and for making this journey as fulfilling as it is.
So much love,
Freya of Mystical Crow
